Zermatt is one of the best resorts in Alps and they offer many activities such as climbing, hiking, skiing, snowboarding and many more. But one of the activities that are popular are biking. There are actually many biking trails and also there are some local bike shops for you to fix you bike. If you want to rent a bike, you can go to rental shops in the downtown area.
During summer when Zermatt is snow free, there are many places to bike with many levels. The ski lifts still operates so you go up the lift and trail some great downhills.
Along the single trails in Zermatt you can see magnificent forests and Swiss stone pine with all the beautiful mountain landscapes. There are variety of marked trails for cross-country, free ride and downhills are set for every mountain bikers. It is absolutely a great place to ride your bike with crisp and fresh mountain air surrounded by the stunning Alpine scenery. Here are some great places for you to bike on the single tracks in Zermatt.
Schwarzsee is at the foot of Matterhorn and it is a great place to bike. There are few steep sections which are a bit demanding and the length of the ascent is a bit strenuous. But the descent is great! The track heads out of Zermatt to Furi and then on through the Schmut Valley to Staffel Alp where the it starts the last section of the ascent on the northern slopes of the Hornli Ridge. The scenery is absolutely breath taking. The route is clearly marked so you won’t get lost. The road is partly paved and some have some lose gravel but the biking there is worth it.
At Tasch Alps, you head out of Zermatt on the east side of town and follow the sign posts for Tuftern and Sonnegga. After passing by the posts, there is a road that goes in large switch backs up to Tuftern. After following the signs for Tasch Alp, you will see a lovely single track that goes on a high traverse way above the wonderful valley all the way on the slopes of Rothorn to Tasch Alp. There are some points where it’s moderately technical and a short section where you have to carry the bike but there are lovely single track that heads towards Zermatt where you can see the gorgeous mountains. Since it is also a very popular hiking trail, it might be wise to avoid the crowd which is usually during afternoons in July and August.
There are various interesting technical tracks but other than that it is mostley single track. You can start fom Zermatt following the paved road down to Tasch and just before the village there is a wonderful bank of river on the left. The track has a bit of steep ascent slopes, a bridge that you can cross and a nice ledge like traverse winding in and out of the valley on an even altitude to Stalden. From Stalden you can take one of the cable car to Gspon. Once up to 1893 meters, you can ascent for Gebidumpass. The path goes through a high alpine forest allowing you to breathe in the nature. The paths are slightly technical and really good switch backs for you to enjoy.
There are much more trails for beginners and experienced bikers with beautiful views. And some tracks are bumpy and a bit hard but if you love biking, you’ll have a rush of adrenaline through the alps and the alpine forest.
