Rothorn offers view of the highest peaks of the Valais Alps at 3103 meters. In summer, the Rothorn is the popular starting point for a variety of demanding hikes and in winter it is the gateway to beautiful sunny pistes. The cable car carries visitors to the summit of the Rothorn or to be precise the Unterrothorn. In summer, this is the starting point for challenging hikes and a popular destination for sunrise excursions. In winter, the summit station offers direct access to the ski pistes. The Peak Collection is an exhibition of sculptures that explore Zermatt’s alpine world and its most famous peaks. Works carry details of the various summits including altitude, geology and first ascents, along with reflections by the mountain guides. Each has an information panel available in four languages. During summer visitors can enjoy the mountain panorama with unobstructed view of Matterhorn and Weisshorn, sunrise trips, extra early rides, paragliding and trail to the Oberrothorn with endemic plants. During winter visitors have direct access to ski pistes, descents by moonlight, mountain panorama with unobstructed view of Matterhorn and Weisshorn and skyline photo point.
Sunnegga is another place that visitors can not miss. It is absolute heaven for families with during summer, the Leisee lake offers a refreshing dip and in winter, skiers of all ages enjoy their first sensations of sliding on snow at Wolli’s park for beginners. The funicular ride from the valley station in Zermatt to Sunnegga takes just 3 minutes. The railway, fully renovated in 2013, leads up a rock tunnel through the inside of the mountain to this sunny, scenic terrace with incomparable views of the Matterhorn is something you can not miss. In summer, the marmot watching station is just few minutes walk from Sunnegga and promises an unforgettable experience for the whole family. There is also a themed trail which reveals fascinating facts about these charming mammals, which lives in burrows high in the Alps. Also during summer, families adore going up to the crystal clear waters of the Leisee. This is the top spot for an outdoor swim in Zermatt, complete with children’s playground and barbecue areas. Children love playing on the big raft and splashing around in the water while adults can relax and enjoy the glorious views of the Matterhorn. During winter, skiers and snowboarders continue on the gondolas, chairlifts and finally the cable car up to the Rothorn. This is the gateway for adventures on the sunny pistes of the whole Rothorn area. However, many return happily to the terrace of the self service restaurant to enjoy the sunshine and the superb views of the Matterhorn. Self service restaurant and sunny terrace is open all year round. During summer, it is the starting point for many hikes including the Five Lakes Walk, visitors can enjoy kickbike descents, mountain bike trails, Leisee lake with swimming, playground and barbecue sites, and marmot watching stations. During winter there is Wolli’s park for beginners, direct access to the ski pistes, winter hiking trails, snowshoe trails and also is the link to the ski pistes on the Gornergrat.
