newlifts

Zermatt’s new lifts; a great investment for all.

Gone are the days when Zermatt was a charming and challenging but divided snow empire at the top of Europe’s Swiss Alps. Now a series of new, state-of-the-art ski lifts give skiers of all abilities the chance to enjoy the peaks and valleys of Zermatt as an interconnected family of diverse challenge and beauty. This comes from a merger in 2002 would you believe? A merger of I think five different lift companies into one super daddy; Zermatt Bergbahnen AG. As a direct result of this marriage made on the Matterhorn the peaks of Zermatt are now reachable one from the other but a series of new lifts.

These include the first chairlift to be built on a glacier in Switzerland. What a change from the blustery old t-bar; cozy and comfortable this takes skiers from the Trockner Steg to, Mamma Mia, Italy. How’d they do that? Never mind, ask the technology experts.

And if that’s not enough, the super new, super roomy, eight seater gondola that whisks skiers from the Klein Matterhorn station all the way to Schwarzsee, via Furi. Goodness just the view is worth riding this aptly named Matterhorn Express. Although definitely the showstopper, the Matterhorn Express is not where the fat lady sung. There is too a six seater chair on the Gornergratt that whisks skiers onwards and upwards to the ski variety to be found on that neck of the Matterhorn, so to speak. Millions of Francs have been invested, and tens of thousands of skiers will be rewarded annually. Truly a win-win situation.
